Meta, during a recent company wide gathering, provided an exclusive preview of their soon-to-be-released competitor to Twitter.
The company’s upcoming standalone application, taking cues from Instagram, will integrate ActivityPub, a decentralized social media protocol. This incorporation aims to offer users of the forthcoming app the ability to effortlessly transfer their accounts and followers to other platforms supported by ActivityPub, such as Mastodon.
As reported by Firstpost, during the meeting, Chris Cox, Meta’s Chief Product Officer, described the upcoming app as their answer to Twitter. Leveraging Instagram’s account system, the app will seamlessly import user information. Internally referred to as “Project 92,” it might be publicly known as Threads.
Reportedly, Cox emphasized the need expressed by creators and public figures for a well-moderated and reliable platform for content distribution. He directly criticized Elon Musk’s management of Twitter, which was met with enthusiastic applause from the attendees. According to Cox, the app’s main goals are to prioritize safety, user-friendliness, and dependability, providing creators with a secure environment to cultivate and grow their audiences.
Cox disclosed that a number of notable personalities, including DJ Slime, have already pledged their commitment to using the app. Furthermore, Meta is actively engaged in talks with influential figures like Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama.
He mentioned that coding for the app began in January, and Meta is working diligently to expedite its release for users.
Meanwhile, during an all-hands meeting observed by The Verge, Mark Zuckerberg discussed his response to the technical features of Vision Pro. He mentioned that the pricing of the headset was a result of a deliberate “design trade-off” aimed at emphasizing more expensive technology and demanding increased computational capabilities.
“I’d say the good news is that there’s no kind of magical solutions that they have to any of the constraints on laws and physics that our teams haven’t already explored and thought of,” stated Zuckerberg.
