India tipped to play a bigger role for French IT firm Capgemini: CEO Aiman Ezzat

Pune: French technology company Capgemini expects India to play an even bigger role globally in managing its business, chief executive Aiman Ezzat said.

“We have half our staff here today and we are growing the role of India,” Ezzat said at the Nasscom Technology and Leadership Forum 2022 on Thursday.

“We are increasing the number of account executives here as we believe India has a big role to play in managing our clients. We have grown the pool of executives and in the future see more Indian senior executives overall at Capgemini,” he added.

The company will bet big on areas like quantum computing, metaverse and synthetic biology, Ezzat said. Capgemini has already started doing some work like launching a quantum grid. “We have launched this application that we think will be relevant to us and our clients around quantum, and we will do the same thing on metaverse,” he said.

The timing, he cautioned, is important, and if one starts building capability and investing too early in the curve before clients start using it, then it will be a very expensive proposition, he added.

“The timing at which you start doing things is pretty important to ensure that you start scaling up your capabilities at the same time that things start happening in the market,” Ezzat said.

A lot of future technologies, he said, would be focused on addressing the challenges of sustainability across industries and sectors.

“One thing which is important for us is to remember how to reduce the footprint of digital. As the world becomes more digital and more emissions start coming from digital, how do you ensure that you work on minimising that in the future so that digital doesn’t become a headwind,” he said.

Going digital has helped bring more freedom in the workforce and companies had to think about it in a different way, in that there is more flexibility around hiring and training people digitally. This is something companies had to accept and build strategies around, he said.

“A counterpart of the crisis like Covid-19 that we come up with a collective awareness which is much higher on a number of issues, like production and consumption patterns, how we interact with each other and the duty to protect the planet for future generations,” Ezzat said. “I believe that technology and innovation has a big role to play in helping build that sustainable future.”
