Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Carens to get new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine

Next-gen Verna, Creta and Seltos facelifts and the Carens will come with the new 1.5-litre engine soon.

Hyundai and Kia models in India will soon receive a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that will replace the existing 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit, which powers the Creta, Seltos and Carens.

  1. New 1.5-litre turbo petrol will be locally assembled
  2. Likely to deliver 160hp, 20 more than 1.4-litre unit
  3. Likely to debut with the Creta and Seltos facelifts in India

Creta, Seltos, Carens to get new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol

The 140hp, 242Nm, 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine has contributed to a reasonable share of sales of the Creta, Seltos and Carens. However, we have learnt that the new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine will be assembled in India, as opposed to the outgoing 1.4-litre unit that was fully imported. This will give the new engine a cost advantage, which will likely bring down the price of the models it’s offered in.

The 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine from Hyundai and Kia’s global stable is offered on models like the Hyundai i30 and Kia Ceed. This unit produces 160hp and 253Nm of peak torque and comes paired to a 48V mild-hybrid system. Our sources have, however, said the mild-hybrid tech will not be offered in India. Internationally, this engine is offered with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine will, therefore, be more powerful than the outgoing unit, with power and torque up by 20hp and 11Nm, respectively. Importantly, the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine will make the Creta and Seltos more powerful than the Taigun and Kushaq, which are currently the most powerful in the segment with their 150hp, 1.5-litre TSI engine.

It, however, remains to be seen what gearbox options Hyundai and Kia will offer with their models. Currently, the Creta turbo only gets the 7-speed DCT, while the Seltos and Carens are offered with 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT options. The new engine is expected to debut with the Creta and Seltos facelifts when they arrive in India.

Hyundai to also discontinue diesel i20, Verna due to RDE

This is not the only revamp in Hyundai’s engine line-up in India. As we have previously reported, Hyundai will discontinue the 1.5-litre CRDi engine from the i20, where it barely contributes to sales, but will keep it alive for the Venue, Creta and other Kia SUVs where diesels still make up a considerable chunk of the sales.

Similarly, the next-gen Verna that’s due in 2023 will not get a diesel engine anymore, but it’s a possibility that it could be offered with the new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, replacing the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit from the current model.
