Kannur Squad has received critical acclaim on its release and the audiences have found an interesting connection of the movie with Mammootty’s 1989 film Mahayanam.
Malayalam superstar Mammootty is currently making waves with his latest release, Kannur Squad, which has been receiving positive responses in theatres after its release on Thursday, September 28. Interestingly, a significant connection has emerged between this film and Mammootty’s 1989 classic, Mahayanam.
Kannur Squad marks the directorial debut of Roby Varghese Raj, who has a unique familial tie to the world of cinema. He is the son of producer CT Rajan, the same producer who brought Mammootty’s Mahayanam to life back in 1989. Adding another layer to this connection, CT Rajan’s other son, Rony Raj, worked as the scriptwriter for Kannur Squad.
A heartwarming post shared on Instagram by Dr Anju Mary, the daughter-in-law of producer CT Rajan and wife of Roby Varghese Raj, has been garnering attention. In her post, she reminisces about the challenging period faced by her father-in-law when Mahayanam was released in 1989. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the film’s box office performance led to significant financial losses, forcing CT Rajan to halt his production ventures.
However, the love for cinema endured within the family, and 34 years later, the batton was passed to the next generation. Rony David Raj, the elder son, embarked on a scriptwriting journey, while the younger son, Roby Raj, made his directorial debut with the same legendary actor, Mammootty, in Kannur Squad. Anju Mary’s post beautifully captures the sentiment of how life has come full circle for the family, with Mammootty playing a central role in both films.
Kannur Squad hit the screens on September 28 and has already created a buzz in the industry. Directed by Roby Varghese Raj and produced by Mammootty under Mammootty Kampany, the film boasts a talented cast including Mammootty himself, along with Vijayaraghavan, Kishore, Rony David, Shabareesh Varma, and Azees Nedumangad. The music is composed by Sushin Shyam, with editing by Praveen Prabhakar.
The 1989 film Mahayanam, on the other hand, was directed by Joshiy and produced by CT Raman. It featured an ensemble cast comprising Mammootty, Mukesh, Seema and Balan K. Nair. The film’s music was composed by Ouseppachan, with the background score provided by SP Venkatesh. The screenplay for Mahayanam was penned by the renowned writer AK Lohithadas, further adding to the film’s legacy.
