Betel-nut is commonly called supari in India.

The small nut has many benefits, which is why it has been used in Ayurvedic medicines.

Nuts, often celebrated for their numerous health benefits as advocated by Ayurveda, include the betel nut, commonly referred to as supari in India. Surprisingly, this small nut, commonly associated with tobacco use, has a range of health advantages worth exploring.

Dr Jitendra Sharma, an Ayurvedacharya from Balrampur Hospital in Lucknow, sheds light on the various benefits of the betel nut. These qualities, stemming from its composition, make it a valuable ingredient in Ayurvedic medicines.

The betel nut, also known as the areca nut, boasts a nutritional profile enriched with compounds like Vitamin B6 and C, phosphorus, calcium, copper, iron, proteins, carbohydrates, and dietary fibres. What sets it apart is its unique elements, such as phytochemicals comprising alkaloids like arecoline, guvacoline, guvacine, and acridine. Additionally, it contains polyphenols like flavonoids, including epicatechin, leucocyanidins, catechins, and tannins, all contributing to its potential health benefits.

One notable benefit of betel nuts is their effectiveness in alleviating nausea or vomiting. These nuts contain elements that help ease this discomfort. Consuming 3 grams of betel nut, along with jaggery or sugar, can help combat nausea, making it a common remedy for individuals prone to travel-related motion sickness.

Despite its hardness, the betel nut is surprisingly beneficial for toothaches. Some Southeast Asian regions use it as a pain-relieving herbal remedy for dental pain. Certain elements found in the nut exhibit analgesic properties, offering relief to those suffering from toothache discomfort.

Betel nuts can also address various gastrointestinal issues, such as constipation and worm infestations. Chewing a betel nut can aid in digestion, stimulate the appetite, and even inhibit the growth of tapeworms, ringworms, bacteria, and fungi.

In cases of diarrhoea, betel nuts can be consumed to alleviate discomfort. Their properties help reduce bloating providing relief to individuals suffering from this condition.

Furthermore, betel nuts can be a source of increased energy and enhanced stamina. They promote heightened awareness and alertness, making them a natural choice for those seeking an energy boost.
