One of the strongest pillars of slapstick comedy in Tamil cinema, Vadivelu has tickled the ribs of Tamil cine-goers for almost three decades. The actor’s ability to seamlessly take the shape of the character he is playing on screen has drawn a lot of critical appraisal from all corners. Vadivelu made a striking career makeover this year with the film Maamannan where he played a serious and complex character with a lot of depth for the first time. It has led to widespread belief that the actor was underutilized throughout his career.
This is not the first time though that Vadivelu has displayed a skill set apart from his impeccable comic timing. His diehard fans would know that Vadivelu has been an occasional playback singer, lending his voice to certain songs. On the occasion of the actor’s 63rd birthday on September 12, let us revisit some of the more iconic songs he has crooned during his career span.
Poda Poda Punnakku
Vadivelu started his career in the entertainment industry with 1991’s En Rasavin Manasile and got a chance to flex his vocal chords in his first film Poda Poda Punnakku.
Not many artists can pull off an imitation of Michael Jackson but Vadivelu aced it with a comic touch in the song Ettana Iruntha from Ellame En Rasathan. Not only did he match steps akin to Micheal Jackson but also sang the song himself.
Vaadi Pottapulle Veliye
This song from the film Kaalam Maari Pochu became a phenomenal hit when it was released back in 1996 and was the first time that Vadivelu’s singing received widespread critical acclaim.
In 2008, Vadivelu starred in his second film as a leading man titled Indiralohathil Na Azhagappan. The song Vandhanam Vandhanam from the film was sung by him.
All songs of Nai Sekar Returns
Nai Sekar Returns was the first film Vadivelu appeared in after his temporary ban from the industry by the Tamil Film Producers Council. In his comeback film, he sang all the three songs in the film.
