Verification of the Aadhaar card: The Indian government recently granted a 15-day comment period on a proposed measure to allow private organizations to use Aadhaar verification.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has drafted a drive to empower private and state associations to lead Aadhaar verification. The due date for feedback was originally scheduled for May 5, but it has now been moved up by 15 days.
According to MeitY’s draft, organizations other than central and state government agencies can now, in limited circumstances, request consent for Aadhaar verification.
The government has declared that these organizations’ requests to process Aadhaar authentication must be accompanied by complete details and justification. These organizations are required to submit a comprehensive proposal, and permission will only be granted if sufficient grounds are presented.
According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the request will be forwarded to the central government if the relevant ministry or government department determines that the proposed use of Aadhaar authentication is in the public’s interest.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) must also receive the proposal. In 2018, the High Court proclaimed that the proposition was at an elevated gamble of falseness.
Although Aadhaar numbers could be used to identify users for state welfare purposes, the Supreme Court ruled that private organizations could not conduct such verification. It is important to note that the Ministry of Finance previously approved 22 businesses, including Tata, Mahindra, Amazon, and Hero, to use Aadhaar numbers to verify customer identities and authenticate other essential data.
Godrej Finance, Aditya Birla Housing Finance, Tata Motors Finance Solutions, IIFL Finance, Mahindra Rural Housing Finance Ltd., Uniorbit Payment Solutions Ltd., and SV Creditline Ltd. are among these businesses.
