General Catalyst is known for its investments in Silicon Valley heavyweights, including Airbnb Inc., Stripe Inc., Snap Inc., Grammarly and Giphy. In India, its portfolio includes CityMall, Cred, Uni and StockGro. Chandrasekaran’s appointment underscores a growing trend among global investors to hire for the Indian market. Earlier this week, ET reported that Facebook cofounder Eduardo Saverin’s B Capital has roped in Chiratae Ventures’ Karan Mohla to identify early-stage startup investments in India and Southeast Asia.
Chandrasekaran is an active angel investor, having backed more than 80 startups since 2015. His portfolio includes freshly minted unicorn Dealshare, NoBroker, Khatabook, Scaler Academy and Pratilipi. He has seen successful exits as well—at Fynd and Netmeds when they were acquired by Reliance Industries and Innov8 by Oyo Hotels & Homes.
In his three-year stint with Facebook as director of its Messenger platform, Chandrasekaran led the India strategy across products, technologies and functions, while working on new products like WhatsApp Payments. Between 2014 and 2016, he also served as the chief product officer of Indian etailer Snapdeal.
