Don, alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra, is one of the defining films in Isha Koppikar’s career. The actress recently looked back at the film, how she landed the part and her experience of filming the popular action thriller. During an interview, she expressed disappointment for not being cast in Priyanka’s role which was ‘more powerful’ and for which she believes she was better suited. Despite this, she recalled signing up for her part because she wanted to work with Shah Rukh Khan whom she called her ‘God’.
Talking about why she deserved Priyanka’s part, Isha told Galatta India that she is a black belt in Taekwondo and has 25 years of training. “I can give any heroine a run for their money as far as action is concerned, even if they are half my age”, she said. Isha also expressed disappointment for not being approached for Don 2 despite giving her best in the first part. She noted how she also approached the makers for the same but was told that the casting had already been done.
Although she didn’t land her desired part, Isha expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside Shah Rukh Khan. “SRK is like God for me,” she said. She further admitted that she settled for her role as she is an ardent fan of the actor. She added, “Even if I had a small part, I would have just played a tree standing next to Shah Rukh Khan in Don. He has so much energy and you derive that energy from him.”
Recalling a funny anecdote from the sets of Don, Isha noted how Shah Rukh kept on saying, “What will I do between these two girls? Who will look at me? I don’t even know how to dance,” during the song Aaj Ki Raat. Isha matched the steps on the party number with Shah Rukh and Priyanka. She further added that despite saying such things, he aced the steps and performed brilliantly in the film.
Don was an official remake of the 1978 film with the same title featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Helen, Zeenat Aman and Pran in titular roles. Now, Farhan Akhtar has also announced Don 3 which will feature Ranveer Singh and Kiara Advani in lead roles. The film is in the pre-production stage and will reportedly hit theaters next year.
