Dia Mirza opens up on casual sexism in Bollywood.
Dia Mirza was last seen in Dhak Dhak with Sanjana Sanghi, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Ratna Pathak Shah.
Dia Mirza has come a long way in showbiz. Revisiting her journey, the actress opened up on the initial phase of her career and shared how prevalent casual sexism was on sets. She also revealed that women hardly had privacy and basic hygiene access during shoots.
In an interview with BBC Hindi, the actress shared, “There would be differences in how we were treated, in the amenities that were available to us. Our vanity vans would be smaller. When we would go to locations to shoot songs, a basic thing like a toilet wouldn’t be available.”
She added, “We would have to go behind trees, behind rocks, and three people would shield you with large sheets. We wouldn’t have space to change clothes. Basically, we lacked access to privacy, access to basic hygiene.”
She then added if male actors would come and arrive late on sets, they were never questioned at all. However if there was a delay due to a woman, she would be called ‘unprofessional’.
Dia Mirza was recently seen in the movie Dhak Dhak. The film which also stars Sanjana Sanghi, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Ratna Pathak Shah in key roles released in theatres on October 13. During a recent interview, Dia Mirza opened up on the ‘hardest time’ in her life and revealed she was not approached by even a single filmmaker for two long years. Talking about why she was never a part of the ‘rat race’, Dia mentioned that she started her production house in 2010 because she was ‘tired of waiting’ for the kind of roles she wanted to do.
