Air pollution can have several detrimental effects on the skin. The side effects are seen more in children, elderly and people with sensitive skin types. Some of the common effects include:

Premature Aging: Air pollutants like fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can lead to oxidative stress, which accelerates the aging process, causing wrinkles and fine lines.

  1. Skin IrritationPollution can cause skin irritation, redness, and inflammation. Particles and chemicals in the air can clog pores and lead to acne and other skin conditions.
  2. Aggravation of Skin ConditionsIndividuals with pre-existing skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis may experience worsened symptoms due to air pollution. It can lead to increased itching and redness on skin. The increased severity of these Pre-existing skin conditions might also deteriorate the quality of life of these individuals.
  3. Uneven Skin ToneExposure to pollutants can lead to uneven pigmentation, causing dark spots and discolouration on the skin.
  4. Dryness and DehydrationAir pollution can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dry and dehydrated skin. This can make the skin appear dull and lifeless.
  5.  Weakened Skin BarrierPollutants can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, making the skin more sensitive and prone to develop infections.
