Delhi air pollution, odd/even rule, ban on BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles – Ask Autocar Anything

Worsening AQI levels every winter trouble car owners with regulatory actions.

Does it make sense to buy a BS4 petrol automatic SUV for my commute through Delhi? BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel cars were banned recently when AQI was poor. Or, is it safer to go in for a new BS6.2 car itself?

Jatin Arora, Faridabad

Autocar India says: The government or the National Green Tribunal (NGT) is less likely to curb petrol vehicles meeting BS4 or higher emissions norms in the national capital region. It is diesel cars that are high on their radar to be targeted as pollution-mitigation measures.

However, if you plan to keep your vehicle for a long period of time, we would advise investing in a new car as it would conform to the latest emissions norms (BS6.2) as well as fuel standards (E20), and be fit to operate, without posing any reliability or regulatory issues, for at least a decade.
