Deciding between a petrol-powered car and an electric vehicle – Ask Autocar Anything

Electric cars are the future, but ICE-powered cars are here to stay for quite a while longer.

I want to upgrade my 10-year-old Hyundai i10 and plan to go in for a Hyundai Venue Turbo. I drive about 5,000km per year, with most of it being on the highway. Since I plan to hold on to the car for at least 10 years, I wanted to know whether it makes sense to buy a car with an internal combustion engine today or should I buy an EV instead?

Deep Chaudhari, Daman

Autocar India says: As things stand, EV charging infrastructure, particularly in urban areas, is expanding, which makes EV ownership more practical today than it was a few years ago. Driving on the highway, however, will still need careful planning due to limited charging stations and relatively low battery range of EVs. Also, EV options below Rs 20 lakh are limited to the Tigor EV and Nexon EV, and despite government subsidies and benefits, these are priced at a significant premium over their petrol counterparts.

Now, addressing the first part of your question, after its recent update with new features and better space management at the rear,  the Hyundai Venue has become an even better package than it already was. So to answer your question, yes, it still makes sense to buy an ICE vehicle, and since you like the Venue, you should definitely go ahead with your purchase.
