Current-gen Mini EV won’t get convertible body style

BMW has confirmed that the current-gen Mini EV, which is also sold in India, won’t get a convertible body style.

BMW will add an all-electric convertible to its next-gen Mini line-up. The company has built a one-off pure-electric version of the current Mini Convertible to test the market for a potential next-generation model. According to BMW, “the one-off Mini Electric Convertible is a prototype, to test the waters of emission-free, open-top driving with Mini”.

Mini EV convertible prototype: specifications

The prototype, built in Munich, uses the current Cooper S Convertible’s upper structure but for its powertrain, it uses the Cooper SE’s 184hp electric motor. This combination makes the prototype 140kg heavier than the ICE Cooper S convertible. The boot capacity remains unchanged from the standard convertible, at 160 litres.

No EV version for current-gen Mini convertible

Despite these encouraging numbers, BMW says the current Mini Convertible will not be electrified. All the company will say on the record is that there will be a new convertible model: “We have announced that the Mini Convertible is to receive a successor, but it is too early to speak about the engine portfolio of the replacement for the current Mini Convertible.”
