ChatGPT has sparked concerns about job security and the fear of being replaced by artificial intelligence tools like Bard and other similar technologies. This has led to a widespread debate among people worldwide, as they ponder the possibility of AI taking over their respective professions. In a recent incident, a woman who previously held a position as a copywriter at a tech startup claimed that she was indeed replaced by ChatGPT. However, rather than actively seeking another job in a similar field, she made a significant life decision and opted to leave the corporate realm entirely, embarking on a new career as a dog walker.
According to an article in The Washington Post, Olivia Lipkin, a 25-year-old woman residing in San Francisco, held the position of the sole writer at a technology company. Initially, Lipkin didn’t pay much attention to ChatGPT when OpenAI launched the AI chatbot in November 2022. However, over time, she noticed articles circulating within her office’s internal Slack group that provided guidance on utilizing the chatbot.
Eventually, in April, Lipkin was unexpectedly terminated from her job without any explanation, as reported. It was noted that she was even referred to as ‘Olivia/ChatGPT‘ within the Slack group at her workplace.
Lipkin added that when she observed her managers discussing the cost-saving benefits of using ChatGPT instead of hiring a writer, it became apparent to her that the reason behind her termination was clear: the AI tool had effectively taken over her role at the company.
“Whenever people brought up ChatGPT, I felt insecure and anxious that it would replace me. Now I actually had proof that it was true, that those anxieties were warranted, and now I was actually out of a job because of AI,” Lipkin said to The Washington Post.
Following her dismissal, Lipkin contemplated entering the field of content marketing. However, she soon realized that the demands of the job were overwhelming and left her with little time for personal writing endeavors, leading to mental exhaustion.
In order to avoid this predicament, she made a deliberate choice to take a hiatus from the corporate environment and currently finds employment as a dog walker.
In her conversation with the publication, Lipkin expressed her decision to completely step away from the corporate world, emphasizing, “I am fully taking a break from the office environment.” She further highlighted the prevailing trend of seeking the most cost-effective solution, stating, “Individuals are seeking the most affordable option, and that option is not a human being but rather a robot.”
