Shah Rukh, after suffering a series of setbacks, waited for 5 years to make a grand comeback this year with two major blockbusters- Pathaan and Jawan.
The Hindi cinema stars of the 90s are on a spree to capture back their thrones. Among the three leading Khans of Bollywood, Aamir Khan seems to have run out of luck as his last film Laal Singh Chaddha was received poorly. Meanwhile, his contemporaries Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan are doing great when it comes to the box office.
Shah Rukh, after suffering a series of setbacks, waited for 5 years to make a grand comeback this year with two major blockbusters- Pathaan and Jawan. On the other hand, Salman Khan’s recently released Tiger 3 has become the biggest opening-day grosser for the actor and has minted Rs 376 crore at the box office worldwide. Even his last film, Kisi ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan did well commercially, despite receiving less than favourable reviews.
Akshay Kumar, who was once said to be the only actor able to face off against the Khans, is suffering a dent in his career. Apart from Suryavanshi, all the films in which he has appeared in the lead have been major failures in the last 4 years. This year’s OMG 2 did well but it was Pankaj Tripathi who was in the lead and took most of the accolades. Coming to another 90s actor, Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 was a massive blockbuster but trade pundits believe that it was the patriotic element and the nostalgia from the original film that worked in its favour and was not a sign of reemergence of Sunny’s stardom.
With proper analysis, it seems that the only contemporary actor who can face Shah Rukh and Salman is the Singham of Bollywood, Ajay Devgn. Ajay Devgn has had two back-to-back hits since last year with Drishyam 2 and Bholaa. Two recent films, where he appeared in supporting roles, RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi were also big hits. This shows that his stardom is still in a stable position. He will soon be seen in Singham 3 which, at a budget of Rs 200 crore, will be the costliest film in the Rohit Shetty Cop Universe.
