BMW has based the prototype on the i4 M50 that’s sold overseas, but with a few key changes. The performance EV features a modified suspension, with the struts taken from the petrol-powered M3 and M4; bulked-up, wider wheel arches to accommodate the two extra electric motors; and a large grille with bumper intakes that assist with the cooling of the powertrain and other mechanical components.

In order to create the new M xDrive four-wheel-drive system, BMW has added electric motors to each front wheel along with an integrated driving dynamics control system. The brand stated that this new drive system “opens up completely new possibilities”, with “extremely precise” torque and power delivered to each wheel “within milliseconds”. BMW has not revealed any power figures for the new prototype, but, for context, the i4 M50 with dual electric motors at the rear produces 544hp and 795Nm.

BMW in India

In December 2021, the German brand launched its flagship iX electric EV SUV in India and then followed it up with the launch of the i4 in May 2022. The i4’s claimed range of 590km, as per the WLTP cycle, is the highest amongst all luxury EVs sold in the market. BMW also revealed the electric version of its latest 7 Series sedan, the i7 overseas in April 2022 which may arrive in India alongside its ICE-version.
