BMW Motorrad announces record sales

The BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS commanded a nearly 90 percent share of the yearly sales.

BMW Motorrad India, the two-wheeler arm of the BMW Group in the country, is on a roll. The company has announced record sales of 5,000 units this year, its best annual sales yet and a strong 95 percent year-on-year increase (CY2020: 2,563 units). This is laudable performance, coming in the face of rather difficult market conditions.

  • Highest sales recorded by BMW so far

  • 5,000 bikes sold this year

  • G 310 models are the most popular

Between late 2017, when it began operations in the country, and 2021, BMW Motorrad India has sold a total of 12,405 units, with this year being its best by far.

In CY2020 (January-December 2020), the sales momentum this year has primarily been driven by the hugely popular and locally manufactured sub-500cc motorcycles – the BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS which commanded a nearly 90 percent share of the yearly sales. This translates into 4,500 units of the motorcycles, which are produced at BMW Motorrad’s cooperation partner, TVS Motor Co’s, Hosur factory. They are among BMW’s most affordable models and an entry into its two-wheeler world.

Eight years after the two OEMs signed a pact to develop and produce sub-500cc motorcycles for the global market, TVS rolled out the 1,00,000th unit of the 310cc series. The strategic partnership has introduced three products on the 310cc platform – the BMW G 310 R, G 310 GS and TVS Apache RR 310. The Hosur plant produces around 10 percent of BMW Motorrad’s volumes globally and the G 310 twins are now available in 120 countries.

On October 1, last year, four years after the G 310 GS was launched in India, the new G 310 GS rolled out. This new model (and the BMW G 310 R) had received small updates to the styling, as well as a BS VI-compliant engine. The BMW G 310 twins use the same 312.2cc, single-cylinder, fuel-injected, liquid-cooled engine that powers the BS6 Apache RR 310.

According to BMW Motorrad India, other popular buys this year are the BMW C 400 GT, R 1250 GS / GSA along with the R18 Classic, S 1000 R and M 1000 RR.

Commenting on the 2021 sales performance, Vikram Pawah, president, BMW Group India said, “Since its inception, BMW Motorrad has redefined the premium motorcycling scenario in India, with its dynamic product range and bespoke riding experiences. 2021 has been a phenomenal year for BMW Motorrad in India. Despite the turbulence in the two-wheeler industry, we have performed well and achieved exponential growth. We will continue to cater to the requirements of the purists, while also fulfilling aspirations of a new base of brand fans who want to enter the Motorrad world. We remain committed in our endeavour to excite riding enthusiasts with new launches and curated experiences.”
