Big demand for sustainability suite, says TCS

Mumbai: India’s largest software services provider by revenue, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is seeing increased demand for technology-based solutions in the area of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG), a senior executive told ET.

On Thursday, TCS said its suite of sustainability solutions consisting of TCS Clever Energy Intelligent Power Plant (IP2) and TCS Envirozone will be available on Microsoft’s Azure Internet of Things (IoT) platform to help organizations gain insights into energy usage and reduce waste and emissions to accelerate towards their net-zero goals.

TCS is working with clients across retail, financial services, pharma, manufacturing, automobile, consumer goods as well as group companies to offer these IoT-based solutions to track emissions and energy consumption, said Regu Ayyaswamy, global head, IoT and digital engineering, TCS.

“There is a lot of corporate board-level focus on sustainability. So, people are really looking at how they can grow their business sustainably. Three years back, everybody was working with minimum viable products but now customers have gone on scale,” he said.

TCS had started working on these solutions for in-house needs in 2014 and began offering it to clients three years ago after witnessing massive savings, Ayyaswamy said.

“We had deployed these sustainability solutions across 150 large buildings in India, and even with increasing floor space and geographical footprint, we found our energy consumption reducing,” he said.

A leading North American pharmacy retailer has deployed TCS Clever Energy to reduce emissions by 26% across thousands of its stores.

At a Middle East-based retailer, TCS Clever Energy is at work across 1,300 stores, driving their CO2 reduction by 25,000 tonnes.

“In India, we have implemented these solutions for Indian plants of global companies, pharma, cement companies. We work with our group companies like Tata Steel, so there are a lot of opportunities,” Ayyaswamy added.

The TCS Clever Energy platform leverages IoT, AI, machine learning and Cloud to help organisations reduce energy and utilities consumption and decrease carbon emissions while saving energy costs in commercial and office buildings, retail stores, warehouses, and factories.

Almost 50% of the sustainability goals can be achieved through this solution for various organizations.

Most of these ESG deals started as short-term engagements with clients seeking to try out the solution before expanding into full-size deals. Companies witness 8-12% energy savings on average through these solutions within 3 years, he said.

“TCS does assessment at first to work out the potential savings for customers, using their current usage patterns. The average carbon emission decrease ranges between 7% and 15% based on factors like the type of industry, current mix of renewable and non-renewable energy the customer is on and the current energy maturity level,” he added.
