Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, are separating after 29 years of marriage. The announcement was made on Tuesday through a statement by Saira’s lawyer Vandana Shah, stating the emotional toll their relationship had endured.
The statement read, “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr. AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs. Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time.”
Shortly after, the couple’s son, AR Ameen, addressed the situation via an Instagram story. He wrote, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding.”
In a resurfaced throwback interview with Rahmaniac.com, AR Rahman spoke fondly of his wife and their journey together. Recalling their first meeting, Rahman said, “In 1994, when I was about twenty-seven, I decided that it was time to get married. For some reason, I started to feel old. [smiles] My mother and my sister Fathima saw Saira for the first time at the shrine of the Sufi saint Moti Baba in Chennai. It was all very easy.”
The couple married in 1995 and are parents to daughters Khatija, Raheema, and son Ameen. The news of their separation has left fans surprised, given the couple’s long-standing bond.
Meanwhile, on the professional front, Rahman continues to focus on his upcoming projects, including Chhaava, Thug Life, Lahore 1947, and Genie, which promise to showcase his musical brilliance once again.
