The Apple Watch has truly dominated the premium smartwatch segment since its arrival. Samsung does provide it with some competition with the Galaxy Watch series, but the popularity of the Apple Watch is unparalleled.
Now the brand is reportedly working on its next-gen smartwatch. Apple Watch Series 7. Like every year, the upcoming Apple Watch is expected to arrive in September.
A few weeks ago, Rockley Photonics unveiled an advanced sensor that is tipped to feature on the Apple Watch Series 7. This sensor will enable the device to have a host of health tracking features.
Apart from this, the smartwatch is expected to get a design change. Renders reveal that Apple Watch Series 7 will sport a flatter display, narrow bezels and a slightly thicker body.
Apple is also working on a rugged watch, but that may arrive in 2022. The same can be said about the health-focused features like blood glucose and body temperature sensor that were supposed to arrive in this year’s model. Now that you have a brief idea of the expected specs, let’s talk about it in detail.
Apple Watch Series 7 specs and features
The Apple supplier Rockley Photonics is again in the news. The brand has launched an advanced digital sensor that is capable of enabling plenty of health tracking features on the upcoming Apple Watch.
Rockley has named this sensor “Clinic on Wrist”. It can track multiple biomarkers like core body temperature, blood pressure, body hydration, alcohol, lactate, and glucose trends, and more.
It is a miniaturized chip solution meant to provide continuous non-invasive monitoring of several biomarkers. This is an attempt to keep invasive sensors that perforate the skin at bay. While most wearables use green LED’s to measure, Rockley’s uses infrared spectrophotometers that are claimed to increase the functionality of wearables widely.
A previous report revealed that Apple is the biggest consumer of Rockley Photonics. In the last two years majority of the company’s revenue has come from Apple, and this partnership is bound to continue further.
Considering the long term partnership, it’s likely that Rockley’s latest chip will come to the Apple Watch. So we may see a host of new features on the Apple Watch sooner or later.
Further, a report from Economic Daily News stated that Apple would use a smaller S7 chip that frees up space for a bigger battery. In another report, Ming-Chi Kuo said that the smartwatch would be slightly thicker than its predecessor.
He also claimed that Apple would skip health sensors for the upcoming model and introduce them in the 2022 model. Thus, leaving some empty room for the battery upgrade.
Apple has also tested thinner display borders and a new lamination technique to bring the display closer to the front cover. It will also get updated ultra-wideband functionality, similar to what we’ve seen in the Apple AirTag.
Moreover, a more rugged Apple Watch is also in the making. It was said that this model would be available as early as this year, but another report denied the possibility saying that it is more likely to arrive in 2022.
Some time back on his YouTube channel FPT, Jon Prosser revealed the complete design of the Apple Watch Series 7. Renders reveal that the smartwatch will feature a flat display, as seen on the latest Apple products.
While the overall footprint will remain the same, bezels may get even smaller on the Apple Watch Series 7. Prosser also says that the new Watch will bring new colour options, including a green variant.
The Apple Watch Series has been long rumoured to feature a micro-LED display. This rumour is backed by a report from Macrumors that says Apple could be working with a Taiwanese manufacturer to bring new panels to the Watch in 2021.
Apart from this, the watch may feature a Touch-ID based fingerprint scanner. We have also heard reports about an under-display fingerprint scanner that would hide when not in use.
The current-gen Apple Watch has an S6 SiP (system in package). Keeping that in mind, we predict the upcoming model will feature an S7 SiP. A DigiTimes report claims that Apple will use double-sided chip packaging to shrink the size of the S7 chip.
Apple Watch Series 7 launch date
Apple has had a consistent track record when it comes to the launch of Apple Watches. The brand has been launching Apple Watch in September since its inception. So, it’s likely that the Apple Watch Series 7 will arrive in September this year again.
Apple Watch Series 7 India price
Apple Watch Series 7 is expected to see a few changes, mostly on the design front. We are guessing it will not affect the pricing of the Apple Watch Series 7 as the brand has been pretty static with the same. The current iteration, i.e. the Apple Watch Series 6, starts at Rs 40,900 ($399). So the upcoming Apple Watch may ship at the same price.
