Apple threat message row: Probe ordered into MPs’ allegations, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

The government has ordered a probe into the warning message received by Opposition lawmakers from iPhone maker Apple regarding a potential bid to hack their iPhones, Union minister for electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday.

Opposition leaders earlier in the day claimed on social media platform X that they got a message from Apple saying their phones are likely being targeted by “state-sponsored” attackers.

“Apple believes you are being targeted by state-sponsored attackers who are trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID. These attackers are likely targeting you individually because of who you are or what you do. If your device is compromised by a state-sponsored attacker, they may be able to remotely access your sensitive data, communications, or even the camera and microphone. While it’s possible this is a false alarm, please take this warning seriously,” it stated.

Vaishnaw said the government is “concerned” over the matter, adding that “much of the information by Apple on this issue seems vague and non-specific in nature”.

The minister added that “Government of Bharat takes its role of protecting the privacy and security of all citizens very seriously” and will investigate to get to the bottom of these notifications.

The government has also asked Apple to join the investigation with “real, accurate information on the alleged state sponsored attacks,” he said.

“Apple states these notifications may be based on information which is ‘incomplete or imperfect’. It also states that some Apple threat notifications maybe false alarms or some attacks are not detected,” he said in a post on X.Apple has also claimed that Apple IDs are securely encrypted on devices, making it extremely difficult to access or identify them without the user’s explicit permission. This encryption safeguards the user’s Apple ID and ensures that it remains private and protected, he added.
