The Salman Khan and Aamir Khan starrer film Andaz Apna Apna was released in 1994. It was declared a flop as soon as it was released.
It is very unpredictable whether a movie is going to be a big hit or a flop. Regardless of various high promotions, many Bollywood films turned out to be huge flops because they were unable to impress the viewers. But there have also been Hindi films that initially failed to impress the audience but later turned out to be cult or superhits through word-of-mouth publicity. So today, let’s take a look at the five films that were initially considered to be box-office bombs but later won the hearts of the people.
1. Mera Naam Joker
Raj Kapoor’s dream project Mera Naam Joker was released in 1970. The filmmaker took six years to make this film. Raj Kapoor even sold his wife Krishna Kapoor’s jewellery for this project. Mera Naam Joker proved to be a super flop in its initial days in theatres. There was a dearth of viewers for the movie on the first day of its release. But later, this film became a hit. It also gained cult status and is regarded as a classic today. Both the audience’s and critics’ responses have turned highly favourable over time. Mera Naam Joker is the second and, to date, the last Indian film to have two intervals.
2. Andaz Apna Apna
The Salman Khan and Aamir Khan starrer film Andaz Apna Apna was released in 1994. This film also did not impress the audience in theatres much. The movie was declared a flop as soon as it was released. However, when Andaz Apna Apna premiered on TV, people liked it very much. Also, within no time, this movie became one of the cult classics.
3. Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year
The Ranbir Kapoor starrer Rocket Singh, released in 2009, left no one in awe when it came and when it went away. As per the report, the film was not promoted. Due to this, the makers had to bear the loss. The movie faced a huge loss at the box office on its very first day. However, later, when this film was released on TV, it was liked a lot. Ranbir Kapoor’s acting was also highly praised.
4. Pyaar Ka Punchnama
The Kartik Aaryan-starrer film Pyaar Ka Punchnama was released in 2011. As per reports, when the movie was initially released, it didn’t receive much recognition. It later benefited a lot from word-of-mouth publicity. Besides, this film was also well-received on TV. Later, director Luv Ranjan also made a sequel titled Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2.
5. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro
The film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, released in 1983, is still counted among the top dark comedy films. But this film proved to be superfluous as soon as it was released. Now, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is considered a classic and one of the best comedy movies to have come out of Bollywood.
