Amazon doubles its India export target to $20 billion by 2025

Bengaluru: Amazon has doubled its export target from the Indian market to $20 billion by 2025 after seeing an increase in the momentum of exports. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos had said on a visit to India in 2020 that the company aimed to export around $10 billion worth of merchandise from the country by 2025. Amazon said it was on track to hit $5 billion in exports soon.

Abhijit Kamra, director for global trade at Amazon India, told ET that over one lakh small and medium enterprises are part of the Amazon Export programme.

“More than 1,000 sellers have breached Rs 1 crore in sales and more than 500 sellers have made more than $100,000 (about Rs 76 lakh) from Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which are major sale events in the US,” he said.

Kamra said Amazon decided to revise its export target after seeing increased momentum over the years. Amazon India achieved $1 billion in exports three years after the programme commenced in 2015. Since then, it has hit cumulative exports of over $3 billion.

He said apparel and toys have seen the highest growth in exports, with the former seeing 82% growth year-on-year and the latter growing at 55%. They were followed by jewellery and home, which grew at 47% and 32%, respectively.

Kamra added that Amazon provides exporters payouts in 7-14 days compared to 45 days in offline export markets. These sellers will have access to 18 marketplaces which deliver products to 200 countries. The US, UK, UAE, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Netherlands, Brazil and Singapore are some of the other major markets for Amazon’s exports.

“We are seeing a rapid increase in the number of exporters joining Amazon Global Selling to cater to the growing demand for Made in India products across the world,” said Amit Agarwal, senior vice president for India and emerging markets at Amazon. “We are therefore scaling up our pledge to boost exports from India using ecommerce to $20 billion by 2025. We will continue to work with all key stakeholders to make exports easier for Indian MSMEs to help them create robust businesses and build global brands from India.”

Amazon said brands such as Indo Tribe (handicrafts), Mou Meraki (leather products), Aromafume (ayurvedic products), D’Moksha Homes (home décor) have emerged as globally successful brands.

The company said goods are exported from metros and small towns in India. In the north, Delhi, Jaipur, Noida, Jodhpur and Amritsar have emerged as the top export cities, while in the south, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Trichy and Madurai are the top export cities, it said.
