Ali Fazal admitted to not being comfortable while performing the violent scenes depicted in Mirzapur.
Ali Fazal’s menacing avatar in Mirzapur speaks volumes of his dedication to his art. The actor’s portrayal of Guddu Bhaiya in the series is nothing short of an acting masterclass for budding actors and deservingly so. But, what if we tell you that Ali was not comfortable enacting the violent scenes depicted in the series? He even faced a ‘moral dilemma’ while shooting an extremely violent scene for Mirzapur as he felt the sequence was unnecessary. The actor himself admitted the same during a recent conversation, also revealing that he has lost out on a lot of work due to a moral dilemma.
While speaking with Sucharita Tyagi, Ali Fazal was asked whether he takes action while facing moral dilemmas during the shoot. The actor responded, “Yes. Now, by way of my privilege, I suppose, it has increased. But I’ve always been a bit… And that’s probably why I’ve lost out on a lot of work. But those moral dilemmas happen.”
Recalling one such experience, Ali Fazal added, “On Mirzapur, there was a scene where I kill someone in what I thought at the time was a very unnecessary way to execute that scene. And I just couldn’t redeem myself. The character also could not have redeemed itself from that. I thought it was just wrong, like why would you write that?”
Reflecting on the constant battle between his head and the character’s, the actor even admitted to sometimes questioning the filmmaker. Ali Fazal continued, “But then there are so many whys. You sit down with the writers, the directors, and that could turn into an ugly…”
One of India’s most successful streaming shows, Mirzapur features actors such as Pankaj Tripathi, Divyendu Sharma, Rasika Dugal and Vikrant Massey apart from Ali Fazal. A theatrical spin-off film titled Mirzapur: The Film was recently announced through an intriguing teaser.
Next up for Ali Fazal is Anurag Basu’s Metro… In Dino (2024). Additionally, he will also be a part of Sunny Deol’s Lahore 1947 and Kamal Haasan starrer Thug Life. His intriguing lineup of projects also includes the Hollywood film Rule Breakers, headlined by the writer-actor Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It is directed by two-time Oscar winner Bill Guttentag.
