Alert Mac users! Government warns against Safari vulnerability

CERT-In, the government’s cybersecurity watchdog, has issued a warning specifically aimed at MacBook users, following Apple’s release of the iOS 16.5.1 update. This update addressed two significant security vulnerabilities and introduced additional features for iPhones. However, CERT-In has identified a bug that poses a substantial risk to Mac users, giving it a high severity rating.

The government body has released information regarding a recently discovered security flaw, identified as CVE-2023-32439, which affects versions of Apple Safari prior to 16.5.1 on macOS Monterey. According to the CERT-In, this vulnerability in Apple Safari has the potential to enable remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on targeted systems.

CERT-In further explains that the presence of this vulnerability in Apple Safari is a result of a confusion error within the WebKit component. Additionally, CERT-In highlights that attackers can exploit this flaw by convincing victims to open a specifically crafted file or application.

The California based Apple has acknowledged the identified security issue and is currently working on developing a solution. In order to ensure the safety of its customers, the company has adopted a policy of not disclosing, discussing, or confirming security matters until they have conducted a thorough investigation and have made patches or releases available.

According to reports, two significant security vulnerabilities that were addressed by Apple in the iOS 16.5.1 update were allegedly exploited to hack iPhones in Russia. The cybersecurity firm Kaspersky brought attention to these security flaws, and Apple expressed gratitude to Kaspersky for identifying them. Kaspersky revealed that the malicious code implanted after the infection contained a set of 24 commands, which included activities such as extracting passwords from Apple’s Keychain, monitoring locations, and altering or exporting files.

Meanwhile, Apple has reintroduced its annual ‘Back to University’ promotion on the Apple Store online in India. This special discount program, which is also available in other countries, aims to assist university students and educators. By taking advantage of Apple education pricing, eligible individuals can save on select iPads and MacBooks. Additionally, as part of this offer, customers will receive complimentary AirPods (Gen 2) along with six months of Apple Music and Apple TV.

Interestingly, to safeguard their purchase, eligible customers can also enjoy a 20% discount on Apple Care+. Furthermore, by paying an additional amount of ₹6,000, customers have the option to upgrade to AirPods Gen 3 or to AirPods Pro by paying ₹12,000. Apple Education pricing is open to university students and their parents, as well as faculty, staff, and homeschool teachers from all educational levels.
