Akshay Kumar argued that even though he can easily make films like Rowdy Rathore, it is films like Mission Raniganj or Padman which give him satisfaction.
Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra starrer Mission Raniganj hit theatres on October 6 but failed to leave a mark at the box office. In its first week, the film recorded a below-the-mark box office collection and earned merely Rs 12.60 crore. Recently, Akshay Kumar opened up about Mission Raniganj’s underperformance at the box office and mentioned that despite everything, it is his ‘best film’.
“I love it! I love the fact that I own it. ‘Mission Raniganj’ – the business of the film is not up to the mark. But I openly say, I have done many films. I’ve done 100-150 films, but ‘Mission Raniganj’ is my best film, and that’s a big statement to make. I’m talking about a film which has not done well, but this is my best film. I hope people come out to go and watch it in theatres. It is an honest film. It is a film which I’m very, very, very proud of,” he told India Today.
Akshay further argued that even though he can easily make films like Rowdy Rathore of Singh Is King, it is movies like Mission Raniganj or Padman which give him satisfaction. “I do take risks. Making these kind of films is a risk. I don’t want to take a safe route. I do make these kind of films also. But the happiness that I get when I make a ‘Padman’ or an ‘Airlift’, it gives me satisfaction. I can easily make a ‘Rowdy Rathore’ or ‘Singh is Kinng’ and earn triple the amount of money. But I’m very happy making these kinds of films. But I also wouldn’t say I will not make these films. I will balance myself,” he added.
Mission Raniganj is inspired by a real-life incident and presents the heroic act of the late Shri Jaswant Singh Gill who led Bharat’s coal mine rescue mission. Singh (portrayed by Akshay Kumar) played a significant role in rescuing all the surviving miners trapped inside a flooded coal mine in Raniganj in November 1989 which is documented to be the world’s largest and successful rescue mission against all odds.
