Aftermarket infotainment systems: do they affect in-built car functions? Ask Autocar Anything

If looking for aftermarket units, always opt for one from a reliable brand such as Sony, Blaupunkt or Pioneer.

I own a Mahindra XUV500 in W8 trim and wish to install an aftermarket infotainment screen that has Android Auto connectivity. I wanted to know if functions like TPMS and car info will work seamlessly with the aftermarket system. If yes, which company would you recommend?

Amit Wadhwani, via email

Autocar India says: Yes, vehicle functions such as TPMS, which relay information on the factory-fitted head unit on the XUV500, can be retained even after installing an aftermarket touchscreen infotainment system.

Most aftermarket head units have provision for integration of a CAN or Controller Area Network bus that makes it communicate and source information from the microcontrollers monitoring various vehicle functions. The CAN bus will allow for seamless integration of the steering-mounted audio controls, as well as TPMS and car information with the new display unit.

While the market is flooded with cheap Chinese imports boasting high memory and RAM specifications, we would recommend going for reliable brands like Sony, Blaupunkt or Pioneer and opting for models with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. For instance, the Sony XAV-AX8000 and Pioneer DMH-Z5290BT offer Android Auto functionality.
