Indian cuisine is taking over the world with its wholesome flavours. Three top restaurants serving Indian food have been recognised with Michelin stars. The three Indian restaurants that received the coveted honour in the food and hospitality industry are Rania in Washington, Semma in New York City, and Indienne in Chicago. Chef Vijay Kumar’s Semma was awarded one Michelin star for the second time, whereas Rania, led by Chef Chetan Shetty, and Indienne, led by Chef Sujan Sarkar, both were recognised with one star for the first time.
Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna shared the news on his social media account and proudly congratulated the trio. He shared pictures of all the chefs and wrote, “Diwali has arrived a little early in US. BIG BIG NEWS. What a milestone. Salute to all the 3 Indian Chefs who got Michelin Stars yesterday in New York. Michelin Guide announced NY, Chicago & DC winners & I salute all the chefs who received the stars. What an honor. What an honor for India, our hospitality & cuisine.” Appreciating the popularity of Indian cuisines abroad, the chef said, “I’m cheering for the day when every guide will have an Indian restaurant with the (Michelin star) around the globe. Let’s cheer for them.” Vikas Khanna’s restaurant Junoon in the United States has held a Michelin star for eight years.
Semma is the ultimate destination for South Indian cuisine in the US. Reportedly, Vijay Kumar aimed to recreate the food he enjoyed as a child on the outskirts of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Semma stands for Awesome in Tamil, and the restaurant is famous for dishes like valiya chemmeen moilee (lobster tail with mustard, turmeric, and coconut milk) and nalli elumbu (lamb shank with black stone flower lichen and star anise).
Chef Sujan Sarkar serves progressive meals at Indienne. As per reports, a seafood podi roast or a passion fruit pani puri are some of its bestsellers. The restaurant received the honour within one year of its establishment.
Chetan Shetty, who leads Rania, likes to explore more with the Indian palate. Reportedly, Shiso leaf chaat, beef short ribs with saffron nihari and charred maitake mushroom, and North Point oysters in Amritsari hollandaise with moringa podi are just a few popular dishes on his menu.
The Michelin stars were presented to these three restaurants at a ceremony in Manhattan.
