2023 SsangYong Torres SUV unveiled; gets new design language

The SsangYong SUV is expected to get a turbo-petrol and diesel engine option; a 4WD version is expected to follow.

SsangYong has officially taken the covers off its Torres SUV overseas. The model will slot between the SsangYong Korando and Rexton, with the latter currently being sold in India as the Mahindra Alturas G4.

  • Design closely matches the J100 concept
  • Gets tech-focussed interior
  • EV version may utilise Mahindra MESMA platform

Features new design language

Official images of the new Torres SUV highlight SsangYong’s ‘Powered by Toughness’ design language that was first previewed via the J100 concept. The SUV borrows several styling elements from other brands, the most notable of which is the Jeep-style front grille with six vertical slats flanked by slim LED headlights with DRLs.

The prominent front bumper houses the squared inserts for the fog lamps and the faux silver-finished skid plate, while the sides feature 18-inch alloy wheels as standard. Other design elements of the new Torres include the thick C-pillar and a Land Rover Defender-inspired, optional storage box. Meanwhile, the rear of the SUV showcases the tailgate-mounted spare wheel cover and the Ford Explorer-inspired LED tail-lights.

Gets a tech-focused Cabin

Inside the Torres’ cabin, you’ll find a digital driver’s display, a dashboard-mounted 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and another 8.0-inch touch panel below it for controlling climate functions, akin to Audi, Jaguar and Land Rover SUVs. It also gets a four-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, ambient lighting, six speakers, four USB ports, ventilated front seats, seven airbags, and ADAS features. SsangYong claims that the 5-seater SUV can offer up to 703-litres of storage space, which can be expanded to 1,662 litres once the rear seats are folded.

EV and 4WD versions expected to follow

The brand has not yet announced the engine or gearbox details of the new Torres. However, it’s speculated that the SUV will be powered by a 163hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol or a 134hp,1.6-litre diesel engine found on the SsangYong Korando. For reference, the Korando is a midsize SUV that would rival the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. Meanwhile, the Torres is also expected to get 4WD, as well as a full-electric version that may use Mahindra’s MESMA platform. The MESMA platform currently underpins the Korando e-Motion and will be used by the upcoming Mahindra XUV400.
