New BMW X1: exterior and interior design

The new BMW X1 gets a large, chrome-heavy kidney grille flanked by slim headlights with inverted L-shaped DRLs. In profile, it features chunky wheel arches and flush door handles, similar to the ones found in the new BMW 7 Series. In terms of dimensions, the new X1 is slightly larger than the outgoing model and is also longer than rivals like the Audi Q3.

On the inside, the new-gen X1 features an interior design similar to the 2 Series Active Tourer sold abroad. The interior is significantly upmarket than before and features a curved display that contains a 10.7-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The cabin offers more space for the rear-seat occupants and boasts of a large 500-litre boot.

New BMW X1: platform and engine options

The new X1 is based on BMW’s FAAR architecture, which will also underpin the upcoming new-gen Mini Countryman. Internationally, the X1 is available with two petrol and two diesel engine options with 48V mild-hybrid technology. These engines will be paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The more powerful petrol and diesel engines are available with an all-wheel drive system.

The X1 also gets a dedicated EV model called the iX1, with a claimed range of up to 437km.

New BMW X1: competition check

The new X1, when launched, will take on the current crop of compact luxury SUVs, including the Mercedes-Benz GLA, the recently facelifted Volvo XC40, and the newly launched Audi Q3. Expect the new X1 to be marginally pricier than before, with prices expected to be in the range of Rs 45 lakh-50 lakh.

Four more BMW cars, SUVs launching next month

BMW will launch a total of five new models, including the new X1 in January 2023. These include the new-generation 7 Series and its electric counterpart – the i7 – the X7 facelift, and the updated BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine.
