2022 Mercedes-AMG G 63 Edition 55 unveiled

Special edition SUV gets cosmetic changes inside and out; remains mechanically unchanged.

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled a special edition of the G-Class SUV to celebrate 55 years of the AMG brand. Based on the V8-powered G 63, the new model is dubbed Edition 55.

Mercedes-AMG G 63 Edition 55: more details

The Mercedes-AMG G 63 Edition 55 is only available in either Obsidian Black or G Manufaktur Opalite White, with both colours featuring a side stripe showing a close-up of the AMG badge. The special edition model sits on 22-inch matte grey alloy wheels, while many exterior details are finished in gloss black. The fuel filler cap is finished in chrome, and AMG is engraved into it.

Inside, black and red leather covers most of the cabin, while carbon fibre details can also be found, and a number of Edition 55 badges mark it out from the standard G 63.

Mechanically, it’s unchanged from the regular G 63, so it has a 585hp, 850Nm twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre petrol V8 engine that can propel it from 0-100kph in a claimed 4.5sec and on to a top speed of 220kph.

The Edition 55 will cost €299,222 (around Rs 2.51 crore) in Europe; order books are already open, but will close in November.

AMG began life in 1967 as a manufacturer of racing engines. The Affalterbach-based firm then started to branch out into producing modified road cars. Mercedes-Benz signed a deal to develop and sell cars with it in 1993 before buying it outright in 2005.

Mercedes-AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer said, “The success story of Mercedes-AMG over the past 55 years is simply impressive. The same applies to the G-Class, which has remained true to itself for over four decades in the course of its unique career. Its long history and still genuine character makes it the perfect first well-wisher for me on our 55th birthday.”

Mercedes-Benz does sell the regular AMG G 63 in India, but there’s no official news regarding the Edition 55’s launch here for now. Other Mercedes-AMG models on sale in India include the A 45 S hatch, A 35 sedan, GLA 35, GLC 43 Coupe, C 43 Coupe, E 53, E 63 S, GLE 53 Coupe, GLE 63 S Coupe, GT 63 S 4-door coupe and the GT R supercar.
