The new Brezza will also feature a sunroof – a first for any Maruti – and six airbags on higher variants.
We had recently reported that Maruti Suzuki has started testing the upcoming Brezza. We can now confirm that the new compact SUV will get the 1.5-litre DualJet petrol engine, like the upcoming Ertiga and XL6 MPVs.
Additionally, the Hyundai Venue-rival will also be equipped with a new 6-speed automatic gearbox and paddle shifters. The same engine could also eventually make it to the Ciaz and the S-Cross in our market.
- The new Brezza will get a more fuel-efficient petrol engine
- It will also get a 6-speed automatic gearbox
- The same engine could go into the Ciaz and the S-Cross
2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza: will have better fuel economy
The outgoing Vitara Brezza gets a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine with Smart Hybrid technology for automatic variants. However, the new Brezza will get the same engine with DualJet technology –codenamed K15C – featuring two injectors per cylinder. Maruti says this will give the engine a greater control over fuel injection, and thereby offering more power and efficiency.
The DualJet, along with the new optional 6-speed automatic, is expected to make the Brezza more fuel efficient, and hence Maruti Suzuki is likely to drop the Smart Hybrid technology. Given the rising fuel prices, and lack of a diesel engine, Maruti Suzuki is also readying a CNG option for the compact SUV in the near future.
It must be noted that all of Brezza’s rivals get an option of a turbo-petrol engine that are said to offer more power, better efficiency compared to larger capacity naturally aspirated engines producing similar power outputs. The same 1.5 Dualjet engine could also power the Ciaz and S-Cross in future. The new engine and gearbox will also see duty in the upcoming Ertiga facelift and the updated XL6 that are due this month.
2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza: what else will be new
The 2022 Brezza will be the first Maruti Suzuki to get a sunroof. Additionally, it will get features already previewed on the new Baleno, like a 9.0-inch touchscreen with updated SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment software, a 360 degree camera, heads-up display and more.
The upcoming model will also get a major safety overhaul, including get six airbags on higher variants, just like with the Baleno. Maruti Suzuki has chosen the right timing as the government recently confirmed that all new cars will soon be required to be equipped with six airbags as standard.
The car will be based on the same Global C platform as before, but Maruti is expected to use stronger steel for the body underpinnings, like the Baleno, to make the Brezza even safer. The current Brezza has secured a 4-star Global NCAP safety rating.
2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza: rivals in India
When launched sometime in June, the Brezza will rival other compact SUVs like the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue and the Toyota Urban Cruiser, which will also get a similar update after the launch of the Brezza.
In addition to the Brezza, Maruti Suzuki is expected to launch the Creta-rivalling midsize SUV, developed in collaboration with Toyota, sometime around the end of 2022.
