You won’t have to suffer like your parents, grandparents: PM’s promise to J&K youth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday promised to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir that they won’t have to suffer like their parents and grandparents as “this region will write a new chapter of prosperity and development in the next 25 years”.

The PM e-inaugurated and laid foundations of projects worth ₹20,000 crore, which included 850 MW Ratle and 540 MW Kwar power projects, 8.45 km Qazigund-Banihal tunnel, three road packages of Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, and also launched ‘Amrit Sarvor’ initiative seeking to develop and rejuvenate 75 water bodies in every district of the country.

Visiting J&K for the first time for a public event since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, he said the Union Territory received ₹38,000 crore private investment in the last two years. He was addressing a rally in Palli village of Samba district in Jammu on the National Panchayati Raj Divas.

“I want to tell the youth of J&K and especially those in the Valley. Your parents and grandparents have suffered, but, I promise, you will never have to suffer like that,” said Modi, adding, “the new opportunities will create huge employment avenues for the youth of J&K.”

The PM also praised the people of Palli village as it became the country’s first ‘carbon neutral panchayat’, with Modi dedicating to the nation a 500 KV solar plant, installed in a record time of nearly three weeks. “Palli panchayat is the first village in the country to become carbon neutral, thus fulfilling the Glasgow resolution,” said Modi. “This village represents energy swaraj.”

He reiterated that the BJP-led NDA government was committed to reducing ‘dil Ki dooriyan’ and physical distances as well. “We want each border village in J&K and Ladakh to remain connected with the rest of the country throughout the year. Also, we want to work on connectivity and time is not far when Kanyakumari Devi and Vaishnao Devi will connect and meet through a single road,” said Modi.

The PM said he was happy that when democracy reached the grassroots in J&K in the last three years, he was talking to gram panchayats across the country from here. “We have 30,000 representatives from the three tier panchayati raj system, who were elected peacefully and are running the show in J&K. Women and Valmikis have the rights now which were denied to them for the last 70 years. I am sure the soul of Babasaheb Ambedkar would be happy as his dream was fulfilled by us,” said Modi.

“I happened to meet a UAE business delegation. They were enthusiastic about (investment) in J&K…investors are coming here with an open mind…Also every penny sent from the central govt to J&K is being spent with all honesty,” he said.

The PM said that the ecosystem of trust and development is booming in J&K compared to past years. “I am told that all the places here are booked till June and July. There is no space available. Compared to the last few years, more tourists have come here in the last few months,” he said.
