Increasing weight is one of the biggest health concerns in today’s era, with obesity being more common in women than men. Many women often wonder what their ideal weight should be. While addressing obesity at a media event, renowned doctor SK Sarin, Director of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi, shared the way to figure out the ideal weight for women based on their height.
Causes Of Obesity
Obesity is a widespread issue among women in India. The primary causes include an unhealthy lifestyle, hormonal changes, reduced physical activity, poor nutrition, and excessive consumption of fried food. After a certain age or post-delivery, women tend to gain weight rapidly, making weight management challenging.
Weight Calculation Using BMI
In medical science, the Body Mass Index (BMI) formula is used to determine whether a person is underweight or overweight. However, BMI is applicable only to adults, not children. It is determined based on age, height, and gender. Dr Sarin shared an easy method to estimate weight according to height.
First, measure your height in centimetres, then subtract 100 from it. For instance, if a woman’s height is 160 cm, subtracting 100 leaves 60 kg, which is considered the ideal weight.
Dr Sarin also mentioned that individuals with a family history of serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer should aim to be 5 to 6 kg lighter than the calculated weight. This adjustment helps in maintaining overall health.
