West Indies vs India, 1st ODI Predicted Playing XIs: Ravindra Jadeja in doubt for series opener

India will lock horns with West Indies in a 3-match ODI series from Friday, July 12 in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Days after beating England 2-1 in an ODI series, the Men in Blue are set for their next white-ball assignment, this time under Shikhar Dhawan’s captaincy.

India have rested as many as their 6 first-choice players, including captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami but they still have a formidable line-up for West Indies, who are yet to hit top gear under Nicholas Pooran’s captaincy.

Despite not having big names, Shikhar Dhawan and head coach Rahul Dravid have a healthy selection headache ahead of the series opener. However, on the eve of the ODI series, it has emerged that Ravindra Jadeja, who was named as the vice-captain of the team, is in doubt after having picked up a knee niggle.

A call on Jadeja’s availability will be taken before the first ODI as the team management is consulting the medical team after the evaluation of the injury. Jadeja might be rested for the ODI series and brought back for the 5-match T20I series, beginning July 29.

If Ravindra Jadeja is ruled out, India will have to go with Axar Patel as the spin-bowling all-rounder along with Yuzvendra Chahal. The presence of Deepak Hooda, who can bowl more-than-handy off-spin, is a boost to the Dhawan-led side.

Shardul Thakur’s availability adds flexibility to the line-up as the medium pacer will be looking to make a mark after a few quiet series in the recent past.

However, India are blessed with some fine names in the batting unit. It remains to be seen who will partner Dhawan at the top of the order as India have as many as 3 opening options – Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan.

Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson also has an opportunity to prove his worth as gets an opportunity after missing the England white-ball series.

It’s also an opportunity for Shreyas Iyer to cement his spot in the XI after having gone through a lean patch after IPL 2022. Suryakumar Yadav is certain starter in the middle-order as the in-form Mumbai batter will be looking to continue his rich vein of form.

India don’t have senior pacers Bumrah and Shami and it gives an opportunity to the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Avesh Khan to put their hands up and deliver. Arshdeep Singh is also part of the set-up and he will be raring to go if he gets an opportunity.

On the other hand, West Indies are boosted by the return of all-rounder Jason Holder as the hosts will be looking to put behind the disappointment of a 0-3 sweep against Bangladesh at home and deliver big against India.
