VP Jagdeep Dhankhar hoists national flag at new Parliament building ahead of special session

The Vice President of India and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankar unfurled the national flag at Gaj Dwar in the new Parliament building in Delhi on Sunday, a day before the forthcoming Session of Parliament, 2023.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also attended the occasion.

VP Dhankar called it a “historic” moment. “Bharat is witnessing epochal change. The world is in total recognition of might power and contribution of Bharat. We are living in times, where we are witnessing development, achievements which we never dreamt of,” he said at the event.

The five-day special session of Parliament, which begins on Monday, is likely to see legislators bidding farewell to the old Parliament building. Inauguration of the new building will be on Ganesh Chaturthi, which falls on September 19, according to government insiders.

On the first day of the special session, both Houses are likely to deliberate on the role and significance of the old Parliament building, before and after Independence of the country. Parliamentarians would share their memories.

Thereafter, there is likely to be a joint sitting of Parliament, either in the old or new building. Before the inauguration of the new building, a pooja is expected to be conducted on Ganesh Chaturthi.The Special Session will also see a discussion on Parliament’s 75-year journey, starting from the Samvidhan Sabha that first met on December 9, 1946.A discussion on ‘Parliamentary Journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – Achievements, Experiences, Memories and Learnings’ will be held in Parliament on the first day of the five-sitting long special session, a parliamentary bulletin said on Wednesday.
