Cultivating lavender seems an ideal solution and the purple vistas this offers could even be a new tourism magnet!


Since 2016 under the Aroma Mission, lavender is increasingly grown in Kashmir. In phase II, damask rose, clary sage, artemisia, wild marigold, dragonhead etc-in high demand worldwide by perfumers and pharma companies-will also be introduced there.

Many years ago, an Italo-German Aussie chef-a career in cooking was probably pre-destined given his diverse genes!-who had fallen in love with India told me about his foraging trip to Ladakh. This was long before foraging became fashionable thanks to celebrity Scandinavian culinarians, so the idea of a chef of a five-star hotel (upscale restaurants were yet to become a thing in India) rooting around for ingredients was pleasantly
