“Trying to destroy free speech in America”: Musk lashes out at activist groups

Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk tweeted on Friday that the company’s revenue has seen a massive drop because activist groups are pressuring advertisers.

“Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists. Extremely messed up! They’re trying to destroy free speech in America”, Musk wrote in his tweet.

Earlier, Musk had written a letter to Twitter’s advertisers, explaining why he bought the company and assuring them that he won’t let the platform become a “free for all hellscape”.

In his letter, Musk had warned of the danger of the social media platform splitting into far-right and far-left “echo chambers”.

The platform “obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences!” Musk said.

“Twitter aspires to be the most respected advertising platform in the world that strengthens your brand and grows your enterprise. To everyone who has partnered with us, I thank you. Let us build something extraordinary together,” Musk wrote in the letter.

Since Musk acquired Twitter, a few brands have paused advertising on the platform over concerns about Twitter’s content moderation policy under Musk.

Musk has said the social media platform will form a content moderation council with “widely diverse viewpoints”. No “major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes,” he tweeted.

On Friday morning (India time), the company began the process of laying off employees by cutting off access to their laptops, email and internal Slack channels, according to various reports, citing an internal email. The email said the company would alert employees by 9 am Pacific Time (9.30 pm IST) on Friday about whether they had been laid off.

“In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” the email read. Musk plans to lay off 50% of Twitter’s 7,500-odd workers, according to these reports.
