Tata Altroz price, sales break up; new engine options, features on cards

The Altroz will also be updated with a new CNG powertrain and more features this year.

The Tata Altroz has just completed three years in the Indian market since its launch in January 2020. As per our sister publication Autocar Professional’s sales and data analytics, from its launch till end-December 2022, the Altroz is estimated to have sold 1,76,596 units in the three years it has been on the market.

  • Altroz currently gets two petrol, one diesel engine
  • Has had monthly average sales of 5,056 units
  • New CNG variant to launch later this year

Tata Altroz: sales break-up

Currently available in as many as 31 variants, with 1.2 petrol, 1.2 turbo petrol and 1.5 diesel engines, the Altroz achieved the 50,000-unit sales milestone within the first year of launch. Then, 10 months later, in September 2021, the 1,00,000th Altroz rolled out from Tata Motors’ Pune plant.

The Altroz sold 60,379 units in FY2021, followed by 62,247 units in FY2022. In the current fiscal, the Altroz is estimated to have sold 45,512 units between April-December 2022, with three months left to close FY2023. This translates into an average monthly sale of 5,056 units.

With multiple powertrain options and a 5-star Global NCAP rating, the Altroz has sustained fair demand in the market. However, it’s still behind the i20, which averages about 7,000 units a month, and quite a long way off from the segment leader – the Baleno – which sells an average of about 19,000 units a month. Prices for the Altroz currently range between Rs 6.35 lakh-10.25 lakh (ex-showroom).

Tata Altroz to get wider powertrain options

Early last year, Tata finally introduced a much-needed automatic gearbox option on the Altroz line-up with a new DCT, but the brand is set to expand the line-up even more. At the Auto Expo this year, Tata showcased a new iCNG version of the hatchback, which we have learnt will be launched later this year. It will come with a 77hp, 1.2-litre petrol-CNG powertrain, but more importantly, it will also get a new ‘twin-cylinder’ tank arrangement, which is said to not impede boot space in the slightest. In this segment, the Baleno and the Glanza also offer a CNG powertrain.

The Altroz will then go on to have the widest powertrain range in the premium hatchback segment, with petrol, diesel and CNG fuel options. Contrary to previous reports, Tata will keep the 1.5-litre diesel engine alive on the Altroz even after the RDE norms come into effect. In fact, with the i20 set to lose its diesel engine soon, the Altroz will be the only diesel hatchback left in this space.

Tata Altroz: more equipment on the cards

Tata Motors also previewed a host of new feature upgrades for the Altroz at the Auto Expo with a sporty Racer version. Chief among these new upgrades was a slick new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s a marked improvement over the current 7.0-inch unit. The Altroz racer also got several other new features such as a revised 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, six airbags, a sunroof, a wireless charger and an air purifier as standard.

While the larger touchscreen is almost certain to be offered on the hatchback soon, it remains to be how many of the remaining features make the cut.
