Slap video: FIR filed against Muzaffarnagar teacher

The Muzaffarnagar police filed a first information report (FIR) against a private school teacher who was seen urging students of a class to “thrash” their Muslim classmate when he was unable to recite a maths table and who allegedly also made comments against Muslim women.

A separate enquiry by the basic education department of the Uttar Pradesh government was also initiated in the matter.

The complaint was registered by the student’s father, who had said a day earlier that he had reached a “compromise” with the school authorities who returned the school fees in exchange of his word that he wouldn’t press for action in the case. The parents also withdrew the admission of the class 1 student from the school.

The teacher, Tripta Tyagi, has been booked under sections 323 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code which deal with punishment for voluntarily causing hurt and for insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.

Satyanarayan Prajapat, superintendent of police City, Muzaffarnagar, said a day earlier that after investigation into the objectionable comments made in the video, it was found that the teacher had “declared” that “those mothers of Muslim children who do not look after their children’s education are ruining their education” and that the person who made the video had confirmed that the teacher said so. District magistrate Aravind Mallappa Bangari confirmed that the video maker was the student’s cousin.

Tyagi, however, told the media that the video had been “edited” and made viral. “The kid of class 1 did not come prepared with his tables and his parents had earlier asked me to be strict with him. Since I am disabled and was unable to get up, I asked two-three students to come and slap him,” she said.
