Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the director behind Animal and Kabir Singh, recently revealed that he briefly considered bringing Shahid Kapoor’s iconic character, Kabir Singh, into Animal as a cameo. However, after some thought, he decided against it, fearing it would feel out of place in the intense narrative.
In an interview with Komal Nahta on Game Changers, Vanga was asked about the possibility of a scene where Ranbir Kapoor’s character in Animal is taken to a hospital, only to be treated by Kabir Singh. The director admitted that he had indeed thought about it and even discussed the idea with his crew. According to him, his team was excited about the crossover, believing it would be a great move commercially.
“The idea of having Kabir Singh as one of the chief doctors actually came to me during the Delhi shoot of Animal,” Vanga shared. While his team encouraged him to go ahead with it, he ultimately decided it wasn’t the right fit. “I didn’t want the cameo to look desperate,” he explained, adding that although he was convinced for two days, he eventually let it go.
Vanga elaborated on his reasoning, stating that Animal had a serious tone, especially in the hospital scene, where doctors inform Ranbir Kapoor’s character about his organ failures. He believed that bringing in a larger-than-life character like Kabir Singh would disrupt the emotional depth of the moment. “If Kabir comes there, then it will be very light,” he said, emphasizing that realism was a key priority for him in Animal.
Additionally, Vanga addressed whether he ever considered casting Shahid Kapoor in the lead role instead of Ranbir Kapoor. He clarified that the thought never crossed his mind. “Ranbir was the only one that struck me for this emotional story,” he said, calling his choice of lead actor an ‘organic’ decision.
While the idea of a Kabir Singh-Animal crossover may have intrigued fans, Vanga’s commitment to maintaining the authenticity of his film ultimately led him to scrap the cameo. Nevertheless, his revelation gives audiences an interesting glimpse into the creative process behind Animal and what could have been.
