Makoto Shinkai’s upcoming anime film Suzume is going to feature yet another collaboration with rock band Radwimps, CoMix Wave Films, Story Inc., and TOHO has announced. The band previously worked on his films Your Name and Weathering With You. Kazuma Jinnouchi, an internationally acclaimed film composer, will also join in providing the sore for Suzume.
Makoto Shinkai stated at the film’s initial press conference, “I want to make a movie that brings people into theatres. To do that, I’m going to maximize the audience’s ability to immerse themselves into a story with the ultimate visual and musical compositions.”
Yojiro Noda of Radwimps said the following about the partnership: “A partnership with someone of Kazuma’s caliber, having worked on both films and video games, has given me an experience I cannot describe in words. It has broadened my horizons.”
Kazuma Jinnouchi added: “The process of developing a sound that can coexist with Radwimps’ amazing mood and energy was simultaneously exciting and nerve-wracking for me, but ultimately I believe we’ve stuck the landing on one of the answers of how that might sound.”
The recordings of the score for the movie were taken outside Japan for the first time in a Makoto Shinkai film. The historical Abbey Road Studios in London was used for recording Suzume’s score, the same location where The Beatles recorded their music.
Also revealed is the vocalist behind the movie’s eponymous theme song. Tiktok sensation Toaka has provided her vocals for the song featured in the trailer.
Yojiro said, “I felt a connection between Toaka’s voice and this music that no one could sever.” Toaka added, “I’m ecstatic to be part of RADWIMPS’ intricate melody and Director Shinkai’s beautiful world that will touch audiences’ hearts.”
Suzume is set to open in Japanese theatres on November 11, 2022, with releases in major territories beginning in early 2023. Crunchyroll will release the movie in North America. In Latin America, Australia/New Zealand, the Middle East and portions of Europe, Crunchyroll along with Sony Pictures Entertainment will release the film. No word yet on if the film will come out in India.
