Former minister Partha Chatterjee and his close aide Arpita Mukherjee were remanded to 14 day judicial custody on Friday by a special PMLA court in Kolkata, at the end of the two-day Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody today. Next date of court production is August 18.

The ED advocates have prayed for jail custody of both Chatterjee and Mukherjee and allowance of interrogation of the duo in jail. The agency advocate has also informed the court about “life threat” to Arpita Mukherjee in jail custody and stated her food and water should be tested before giving it to her.

Chatterjee was taken to Presidency Correctional Home while Mukherjee to Women Correctional Home, Alipur today, following the court order. The court has directed the Superintendent of Presidency Correctional Home and Women Correctional Home, Alipur to ensure “safety and security” of the accused and allow the ED Investigating Officer (IO) to interrogate the accused along with two officers and record statements of the two accused.

Meanwhile, the agency has informed the court about 31

policies in the name of Arpita Mukherjee, in which Partha Chatterjee has been mentioned as nominee. It is noteworthy that in those policies, Chatterjee has been mentioned as “uncle” in the relationship column. The agency, during the hearing in court, has also claimed that they have found a company Ananta Texfab which in the name of Chatterjee and Mukherjee and identified a trust, where family members of Chatterjee and Mukherjee were members. Mukherjee’s lawyer Niladri Bhattacharya also sought safety and security of her client and claimed that Arpita be treated as Division prisoner as she is highly educated.

ED has argued against bail plea of Chatterjee citing the fact that he is influential. The agency has stated in court that Chatterjee has reportedly told the ED officials to delete the SSC related documents from the seizure list, ahead of his arrest.

Countering the agency’s claim, Chatterjee’s counsel Krishna Chandra Das prayed for bail for Chatterjee and claimed that he is ready to resign as a MLA, if he is thought to be influential. The counsel also claimed that his client is not a person who will flee, if given bail. Ad

Das also claimed that these LIC policies are engineered and many documents, including deed, in the seizure list are “fake”.

“We prayed for bail as he is a senior citizen with several ailments. He has been suspended from all the posts,” Das claimed, adding that many documents, including the LIC policies and land deeds are “engineered and fake.”
