Monsoon covers most parts of Andaman, some of Bay of Bengal

Monsoon rains have covered most parts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Andaman Sea and some parts of southern Bay of Bengal, largely in line with what was forecast, the weather office said on Monday.

“In view of strengthening of southwesterlies in the lower tropospheric levels, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity and

cloudiness over the area,” the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. It said the heat wave condition in the country is likely to reduce significantly in intensity and distribution over northwest and central India from Monday, with maximum temperatures likely to drop by 3-4 degree Celsius.

There could be isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kerala, where southwest monsoon is likely to reach by May 27, IMD said. This is a result of a cyclonic circulation that lies over Lakshadweep in the middle tropospheric levels and another cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu coast in the lower tropospheric levels.

Areas around coastal and south interior Karnataka, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh could also get heavy rainfall over next 4-5 days, IMD said.
