The universe of The Big Bang Theory is expanding once again, this time with a new story centred around the not-so-lucky Stuart Bloom. The beloved comic book store owner, always on the sidelines, is finally stepping into the spotlight with a spinoff series named Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. But with a title that, it seems his streak of bad luck may not be ending anytime soon.
Kevin Sussman is set to reprise his role as Stuart Bloom, joined by Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Stuart’s girlfriend and comic book store assistant. Brian Posehn will return as Caltech geologist Bert Kibbler, alongside John Ross Bowie as the ever-entertaining scientist Barry Kripke. According to Deadline, while the series hasn’t officially been picked up yet, Sussman and the rest of the returning cast have talent holding deals with Warner Bros. Television — meaning they’re ready to jump on board if the show gets the green light.
The series is written and executive produced by Big Bang Theory co-creator Chuck Lorre, along with Zak Penn and fellow co-creator Bill Prady. Lorre has also served as a co-creator and executive producer on all of the show’s spinoffs to date. Since the spinoff was first announced in April 2023, there has been speculation that it would focus on Stuart and his comic book store.
Like previous spinoffs, this one also follows the tradition of naming the show after its main character. First, there was Young Sheldon which explored Sheldon Cooper’s childhood. Then came Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage which followed Sheldon’s older brother.
Stuart, who first appeared in Season 2 of the Mothership series, was a reliable source of humour but he often felt like an outsider. Over time, he found companionship in Denise and formed a close friendship with Raj in Season 6. He became a fan favourite and appeared in over 80 episodes.
This new show will likely explore more of his life, relationships and all the ups and downs that come with it.
If picked up, this will be the fourth series in The Big Bang Theory universe. The original show ran for 12 seasons and ended in 2019. Young Sheldon starring Iain Armitage became a hit that ran for seven seasons before wrapping up in May 2024. A spinoff of that show, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, made its debut last year.
Sussman’s other acting credits include shows like Ugly Betty, My Name Is Earl, Weeds, Lessons in Chemistry, and films such as Wet Hot American Summer, Sweet Home Alabama, Hitch and Burn After Reading.
