Kangana Ranaut, who is gearing up for her upcoming film Emergency, said that she wouldn’t have to direct her films if there were good filmmakers in Bollywood.
Kangana Ranaut, who will next be seen in the film ‘Emergency’ talked about taking creative reins in her hands, and directing the film herself. She expressed her disappointment in Bollywood directors, and said that she wouldn’t have to direct her films if there were good filmmakers in the industry. She especially called out ‘big directors’, and claimed that the way they treat female characters is ‘atrocious’. Not just Bollywood, she also expressed her disappointment with the way female protagonists are portrayed in South films, and said that she doesn’t want to be in their place.
In an interview with IWMBuzz, Kangana Ranaut said, “I am disappointed in the directors around us. We don’t have directors. If we had good directors, I didn’t have to do it. This is not to disrespect anyone, but in all honesty, if you think that there’s a dream director I want to work with, there’s nobody alive. And this has been my case for the past five years. And especially those who are making big films. The way they treat their women characters is atrocious to another level,” said Kangana, further expressing that there is not a single director in the film industry that she wants to work with.
Kangana Ranaut On Why She Has To Direct Her Own Films
She explained that early on in her acting career, she did ‘hit gold’ with new directors. “Whether it is Queen, Tanu Weds Manu, or in my initial years also whether I did Gangster, Fashion…they were relatively new directors. I have never had a Khan film or a Yash Raj launch. I have been very disappointed with directors, writers and I was like, ‘This is it. Enough is though. I will do something and I will do it on my own.’ And it has been very gratifying,” said Kangana.
For the unversed, Kangana Ranaut’s 2014 film ‘Queen’ was directed by Vikas Bahl, while the 2008 film ‘Fashion’ was helmed by Madhur Bhandarkar. Her 2006 film ‘Gangster’ was directed by Anurag Basu, while the 2011 film ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ was directed by Aanand L. Rai.
Kangana Ranaut Says Bollywood Lacks Good Directors
She further said that she wants to encourage more people to start directing as Bollywood lacks good directors. “Especially film industry people who say that apparently their DNA is full of acting. So why not sometime try your hand in direction also? Because they all just want to pamper their vanity,” she said.
Kangana cited Shreyas Talpade and Anupam Kher, highlighting how they have forayed into more than just acting. “Shreyas sir directs, Anupam ji directs. He (Shreyas) is also a good voice artist. Anupam ji is also a coach. I see when people come from outside, they are a lot more dynamic. But other than that, this is not to throw shade on anyone, but there’s not a single director I want to work with. So that’s how I ended up here,” shared Kangana.
Kangana Ranaut On Portrayal Of Females In South Films
“Still for male guys, maybe there is a bigger opportunity but even the South films. Look at their female protagonists. Do I want to be in their place? No, sorry. Absolutely not,” concluded the actress.

Helmed and co-produced by Kangana, the film is based on a screenplay by Ritesh Shah and story written by the actress.
