Joe Jonas has been making the most of his TikTok time, especially as the app’s fate in the United States hangs in the balance. The singer recently delighted fans by showing a whole new persona, complete with dramatic flair and the Internet can’t get enough. On Thursday night, January 16, Jonas shared a video where he transformed into a drag version of himself. Sporting a sleek brunette bob, understated makeup and a daring pleather dress that revealed his chest tattoos, the pop star lip-synched to a clip from the iconic 90s horror show Are You Afraid of the Dark? With a confident smirk, he mouthed, “I’m going rollerskating. Don’t touch my stuff,” embodying his alter ego with flair.

The response from fans was immediate and full of hilarity. According to Billboard, one commenter channelled nostalgia, referencing the Camp Rock anthem, “This is real this is me.” Another couldn’t help but notice a resemblance to Broadway legend Patti Lupone. And, with TikTok’s potential ban looming, one fan speculated the video might be a coping mechanism saying, “Joe… blink twice if TikTok being banned is getting to you.”

Jonas’ TikTok post coincides with significant developments regarding the app’s future in the US On Friday morning (January 17), the Supreme Court upheld a federal statute requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell the app to a US business by Sunday or face a nationwide shutdown. Despite the looming deadline, President Joe Biden signalled he wouldn’t enforce the ban during his final days in office, leaving the decision in the hands of President-elect Donald Trump, who recently promised to keep the app accessible, reports Deadline.

For Jonas, this playful drag moment comes amidst a whirlwind of changes in his personal and professional life. In September 2023, he and Sophie Turner finalised their divorce after four years of marriage. The couple shares two daughters, Willa (4) and Delphine (2). Just a year later, Jonas released his second solo album, Music For People Who Believe In Love, in October 2024.

Reflecting on the creative journey behind his latest project, Jonas opened up in an interview with Billboard. “I’m a happy person, and the music needed to resemble that—but also, the journey to get here. I was going through a lot of life changes, finding out who I was as a person and father and friend and living under the microscope of what the music industry can be. And I think, at such a crazy time in my life, I looked to music as an outlet,” he said.

From drag alter egos to heartfelt albums, Jonas continues to keep fans entertained and intrigued. Whether TikTok survives the weekend or not, one thing is clear – Joe Jonas knows how to make the most of the moment and his fans are here for the ride.
