Chevrolet Corvette sports car to come with hybrid, electric variant in future

The electric version of the sportscar could be called the Corvette E-Ray.

Chevrolet has confirmed that the Corvette will get a hybrid version soon and an all-electric version in the future. In a tweet showing a camouflaged Corvette prototype undergoing cold-weather testing, the American brand confirmed that an “electrified Corvette” – likely to be a hybrid – will be available “as early as next year”.
  • Electrified Corvette’s battery will drive the front wheels
  • Electrified Corvette will likely come next year
  • Chevrolet exited the Indian market in 2017

The teaser video suggests an all-wheel-drive set-up and has the V8 engine noise in the background, which indicated the hybrid version. General Motors CEO Mark Reuss also confirmed on LinkedIn that the first electrified Corvette is due to be launched in 2023, and the electric version will be built on GM’s new Ultium platform.

The first electrified Corvette will likely feature a small battery working in conjunction with the existing engine, with the front wheels being powered by electricity through twin motors, while the V8 powers the rear. Although official names for both cars are yet to be announced, Chevrolet trademarked the name Corvette E-Ray all the way back in 2015, and this will likely be used for the electric version.

Electrified versions of the Corvette were first hinted at back in 2019, at the launch of the C8 generation, with inside sources saying that the powertrain had been designed to allow for electrification.

Globally, the new versions of the Corvette will join the standard coupe and convertible models, fitted with a 495hp, naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine and available in right-hand-drive depending on the market. There will also be a new track-focused Chevrolet Corvette ZO6, which features a 670hp, 5.5-litre V8.

Expect more details on the new Chevrolet Corvette models in the coming months.
