BYD Sealion 5 EV exterior design
BYD already sells a Sealion 5 plug-in hybrid in some overseas markets, but the EV iteration features completely different styling and dimensions despite carrying the same name. In front, the Sealion 5 EV has a connected LED headlight setup resembling the one in the Atto 3. The bumper has cameras and sensors, and below it is a wide air dam with a silver skid plate and body-coloured shroud flanked by inward-leaning vertical air intakes on both sides.
Thick plastic cladding with body-coloured inserts and a downward crease can be seen on the side, with the wheels sporting a black-and-silver finish. A portion of the D-pillar is blacked out to create a floating roof effect, and at the rear, the Sealion 5 EV has a long rectangular light bar with a smoked effect, illuminated BYD logo and a roof spoiler.
Sealion 5 EV has a longer wheelbase than its PHEV counterpart
The all-electric SUV is 4,520mm long, 1,860mm wide and 1,630mm tall. Overall, the EV is smaller than its plug-in hybrid counterpart, but its wheelbase is 8mm longer at 2,720mm. The version with the higher battery capacity weighs 1,780kg, and the other one tips the scales at 1,670kg.
BYD Sealion 5 EV battery and range
Up to 60.9kWh and 520km claimed range
The Sealion 5 EV has a rear-wheel-drive, single-motor layout. BYD claims the e-SUV has a “class-leading” turning radius. It will be available with two battery pack options: 50kWh and 60.9kWh.
The larger pack likely corresponds to the version that weighs 1,780kg, offering 214hp and a 520km claimed range. Meanwhile, the 50kWh variant produces 188hp and can achieve a claimed range of 430km. Both Sealion 5 EV variants have an electronically capped top speed of 180kph.
BYD Sealion 5 EV launch details
BYD has confirmed that the Sealion 5 EV will launch on March 25 in China, but an India launch is currently unconfirmed. As of last year, BYD was considering a Creta EV rival in the Rs 20 lakh price range for India, but the Atto 2 is a likelier option than the Sealion 5 EV for the same.
